Many years ago Elvis Presley sang the song, "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," and that song puts into words and music the message of Step Two in the 12 Steps. You can hear it and see it on the video in the column on the right.
Step One is all about coming to the point where we realize that we helpless to overcome our addictions and undesirable behaviors. If we stayed at that place we would literally die of desperation. Our hope for recovery would be gone and we would feel that there was no use going on. We would begin to live the slow death hopelessness.
But thank God we don't have to stay there. When we look outside ourselves and realize that there is a power greater than ourselves and perhaps, just perhaps, that power can restore my sanity.
This step is about the birth of faith in us. Up to the point of reaching step two in our journey it seemed that we had only met disappointment with those we had trusted. Broken trust and disappointment had littered our life. We had lost confidence in others and ourselves. It is difficult to climb out of that hole and move forward, but that is exactly what step two is about.
You can rest assured, there is somebody bigger than you and I - and he is just waiting for us to call on him.
It may be hard to accept, but God had a hand in getting you to this point. I don't mean that he caused you to do the things that created the circumstances which put you in your present situation, you've got to take responsibility for that yourself. But I am saying that God will take the circumstances we created and use them as a calling card to draw us to himself.
If you are at the point of being willing to take this first baby step of faith and realize that there is a power greater than you who can restore your sanity, and you have the courage to take that step then I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

There is a Scripture related to this step and it reads, "For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose" (Philipians 2:13). God, the power bigger than us, is working in us, working in you and I, to get us into the position where he can work his miracle in us and release his plan for us.
There is a passage which tells us about God's plan for us. It is in Jeremiah 29-11 and reads, "I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
