Recovery is more than just learning to recite the 12 Steps. It is learning to walk out the steps and to internalize the process. These pages are designed to be a support to those who have made a commitment to recover from undesirable behaviors and addictions.
The Journey Begins...
John had come to interview about being admitted to the New Hope Community Project. New Hope worked with chronically homeless families and singles. We asked John why he had come to the interview. John said, "I woke up one morning last week in the gutter and suddenly realized that if I kept going the direction I was going I was going to die, and I didn't want to die."
Johns story is typical of many I have heard over the years. He had started doing drugs when he was a teenager because it was fun and he gained acceptance among a group of people. The thing he did for fun, for recreation, became the thing which captured him into a lifestyle of doing things that he was embarrassed and ashamed of.
Finally, after many years of trying on his own to be free John reached out for help. He had reached his bottom. At last he was convinced that he could not conquer this thing on his own. He had reached step one:
We admitted we were powerless over our addiction and that our life had become unmanageable.
The form I like best is:
We admitted we were powerless over the effects of our separation from God and that our lives had become unmanageable.
The difference in the two forms of step one above is subtle, but it is significant. The latter form identifies addiction as being something that separates us from God and the result is that our lives have become unmanageable.
It is not only the addictive, or habitual behavior which is affecting our lives but it is being separated from God and his ability to fulfill his plan of blessing and prospering us.
