Many years ago I discovered the Looking Forward Life. I found it in the writings of Apostle Paul. He writes in Philippians 3, "One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (v13-14).
How did I get the Looking Forward - 24 Hour Life out of that? First my faith was a bit shaken by Paul's confession that he had not already attained full maturity. I had hope that someday I would be like him, but now I was a bit disappointed.
Then I began a Bible study on this passage. What I discovered changed my life. Paul first confessed that he was not perfect, but he wasn't content with that so he said, "I forget what is behind." As if to say that he put his imperfections, his shortcomings, behind him. That got my attention. I thought, "OK, that is a good idea, but how do I do that?"
I had found that I was failing every day in one way or another and the guilt, coupled with disappointment in myself, was consuming me. Forgetting my failures was a good idea, but I needed to discover how to do that.
Paul gives us the secret to that in the next phrase: "and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
The secret to getting past failures is to change our focus from the failure to the hope that is in Christ Jesus. Instead of looking back, which is discouraging, we look forward, which builds our faith and gives us hope for tomorrow.
The Looking Forward - 24 hour life concept came out of the thought that today I will live with the gift God has given me. A saying I heard once was part of this inspiration. It goes, "Yesterday is history, it's the past; tomorrow is a mystery, we don't know what it holds; today is all we have, it is a gift from God, I guess that is why we call it the "present."
If today is all the life I have I had better make the best of these 24 hours. When this short life is up I'll get another one tomorrow.
